Air Quality Analysis

Learn how to address the significant air quality challenges posed by increasing urbanization and development. Designed for planning and environmental protection professionals who manage, review, and prepare air quality and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions analyses, this course presents the principles of air quality and GHG assessment and regulation for land use and transportation projects. Through lectures and case studies, build your knowledge of air quality basics including a summary of criteria air pollutants, toxic air contaminants, and GHGs; their sources; and related health effects.

Additional topics include:

• Brief history of air quality regulation

• Federal, state, and regional regulatory framework

• Construction and operational emission source categories and a brief guide to data collection

• Current emission inventory modeling tools, including a real-time run-through of the California Emissions Estimator Model (CalEEMod)

• Overview of health risk assessments and dispersion modeling, including an introduction to AERMOD and HARP 2

• Components of air quality and GHG/climate change assessments under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), including a discussion of thresholds

• Recommendations for post-2020 GHG emissions analyses and other challenges associated with relevant case-law

This is an online, remote learning course, which consists of 6 hours of content and curriculum that is taught with pre-recorded lectures as well as at least one mandatory live Zoom session with the instructor(s). Pre-recorded lectures and live sessions are accessed via our Canvas learning system and Zoom. This course is the same length as a standard 1 day, in-person course, please be sure to plan your schedule accordingly.

This course is open December 13 - December 15, with a live session on December 15, 10:00AM-12:00PM PDT.

Attendance of the live session is mandatory to receive credit for this course.

We allow registration through noon (12:00 PM PDT) on the first day of the course. We cannot extend course access beyond 11:59 PM on 12/15, so students pursuing a late enrollment acknowledge that they will have less time to complete the materials. Brian Grattidge

Brian Grattidge is an environmental land use planner with over 20 years of experience. As a consultant, Mr. Grattidge has worked extensively in the areas of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA) compliance. His project experience includes a wide range of residential, commercial, industrial, mining, educational facilities and infrastructure projects. He has assisted clients with airport compatibility planning, development review, environmental permitting, specialized planning studies and project management.

Matthew Morales

Matthew Morales is an air quality specialist with 11 years’ experience preparing technical analyses for numerous planning and environmental projects related to development, natural resource management and facility expansion. Trained in air quality, including greenhouse gas (GHG) and climate change and noise analysis, he is adept at applying air quality and noise models, such as the California Emissions Estimator Model (CalEEMod), Caline-4, AERSCREEN, AERMOD and the Federal Highway Administration’s Traffic Noise Prediction Model.

Adam Poll

is an air quality specialist with Dudek. He has over 15 years’ of experience in air quality, greenhouse gas and energy impact analysis for California Environmental Quality Act and National Environmental Policy Act projects. Mr. Poll has prepared air quality and GHG emission calculations, air dispersion impact modeling and health risk assessments for projects in a variety of industries, including residential, commercial, industrial, aerospace, data centers, oil and gas, transportation, cannabis, mining and more. Mr. Poll has been on the board of the Channel Islands Chapter of the Air & Waste Management Association for over 5 years and is the current Secretary of the chapter.

Jennifer Reed

leads Dudek’s air quality services team and has over 15 years’ experience. Ms. Reed specializes in air quality, greenhouse gas emissions, health risk assessment, and energy technical analyses, and continues to be on the forefront of evolving science, emissions modeling computer programs, regulatory framework, and caselaw. She has been responsible for the management, analysis, and technical leadership of numerous public and private development projects subject to compliance with CEQA and NEPA. In addition, Ms. Reed is an active member in AEP’s Climate Change Committee and has demonstrated success in relaying technical analyses in a way that is easy to understand.
